Colt Revolver

The Lord God made man, Abraham Lincoln gave them freedom
but Colonel Samuel Colt finally made them equal
— as says an American proverb
The first revolvers appeared in the early stages of the development of handguns in the 16th century. Such a weapon was also known in Russia.
It is known that the Tula craftsmen began manufacturing the flintlock pistols with cylinders at the end of the 18th century.

However, the heyday of revolvers reached its peak in the middle of the 19th century and is associated with the name of the American entrepreneur Samuel Colt.
The exhibition shows a Colt revolver manufactured at the factory of the Tula craftsman Peter Kornilovich Goltyakov.

A.P. Gorlov, Russian army colonel, who was a Russian military agent in the United States,
highlighted an array of differences from American models:
The curvature of the tracks on our Mr. Colt’s revolvers is the same along the entire length of the bore, while the revolvers manufactured by Mr. Colt (patented) have this curvature increasing gradually with the approach to the muzzle. This adjustment of our revolvers is made for the ease of removing rust from the tracks by a lead toolм.

The meeting of Nicholas I and Samuel Colt at the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg took place on October 30, 1854. The businessman granted the Emperor three luxuriously decorated revolvers representing dragoon, naval and pocket models.
Nicholas I was not surprised by this weapon to Colt’s amazement.

Colt’s attempt to secure an order for his revolvers in Russia failed.
Colt revolvers were not officially in service in the Russian army.
However, Russian officers were encouraged to buy their at their own expense. In Russia, these revolvers were manufactured at private enterprises, including in Tula.
Since 1854 revolvers were used in the Russian Navy.
It is known that in the spring of 1854 Tula gunsmiths presented to Nicholas I a Colt revolver of their own production. This event was followed by the Emperor’s order for the Tula Arms Factory to produce 400 of these revolvers intended for the naval crew guards, and also for the imperiality rifle regiment officers. The order for the fleet had been completed by January 1, 1855.
Then, many countries arranged the production of cap and ball revolvers of different models.

Thus, the Tula craftsman Nikolai Ivanovich Koltakov created a revolver of his own design.
Over time, cap and ball models were superseded by more sophisticated revolvers fit for unitary round type.
Manufacture of cap and ball revolvers in the mid 19th century was quite a complex business. Nonetheless, Tula craftsmen adequately coped with this task.
